Bleeding Hearts The Poetic Voice of America, 1939

The term 'Bleeding Heart' did not have the same meaning in the early part of the 20th Century that it has today.  It was primarily a term for an emotionally damaged, heart broken person.

Across the broken trail of years,
Strong, stalwart sons march through our tears;
Within the fields where poppies bloom,
For bleeding hearts we must make room;
Sweet joy and peace will be no more
Until the cannons cease to roar.
Until there's peace--brave sons our loss--
A Bleeding Heart grows near each cross.
